This name originates from Canada. It is part of the Canada Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
The Strait separates Fridtjof Island from Wiencke Island on the West side of Antarctic Peninsula. Named in honour of Patrick R.M. Toomey, retired Captain in Canadian Coast Guard with many years experience as an ice pilot in Antarctic waters.
