The feature was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Joan J. Fitzpatrick, Research Scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey specializing in geology and climatology, and serving as a principal investigator in numerous projects involving ice core analyses and other related activities.
