This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

The island is in the Rauer Group. It is the larger island between Caro Island and Hyslop Island.

Named For

Leigh Hornsby has done approximately twenty seven trips to Antarctica, flying many thousands of hours in the process and has played an integral part in the development of operational procedures for helicopters in the Australian Antarctic Territory. 1. First trip 1977/78. He has done approximately twenty seven trips to Antarctica flying thousands of hours in the process. 2. He is a recipient of the Australian Antarctic Medal. 3. Flown in areas including; Macquarie Island, Casey Station, Davis Station, Heard Island, Mawson Station, Enderby Land, Amery Ice Shelf , Molodeznya, Terra Nova Bay, Gondwana, McMurdo, Scott Base and Little America. 4. Been an integral part of development of Antarctic Helicopter capability. The island is in an area that Leigh would have flown over many times and reported his location.
