Origin

This name originates from United States of America. It is part of the United States Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

A subglacial trench under Byrd Glacier located in Victoria Land between Britannia Range and Nicholson Peninsula the center of which is approximately 75 miles southwest of the mouth of Byrd Glacier and Barne Inlet. Named by ACAN for Sivaprasad ("Prasad") Gogineni Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas. He has more than two decades of research and teaching experience in radar remote sensing of the Earth, including polar ice sheets. He has successfully led multi-disciplinary research projects funded by NASA and NSF. He served as the Director of the Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory at the University of Kansas before serving as Manager of NASA’s Polar Research Programs during 1997-1999. During his tenure at NASA, he served as an interface between science and flight project groups and as the chair of the science panel of Earth System Science Pathfinder missions. He is Director of the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) where he manages and develops connections between science and engineering in polar research.
