Feature type: Cove
This name originates from Bulgaria. It is part of the Bulgaria Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
The 1.6 km wide cove indenting for 1.2 km the SW coast of Elephant Island in the South Shetlans Islands SE of Piperkov Point, and centred 8.64 km NW of Cape Lookout. Its SE entrance point is situated 7.94 km NW of Cape Lookout. Formed as a result of glacier retreat in the late 20th century. British mapping in 2009.
Named after Captain Ivan Krastanov, commander of the Bulgarian ocean fishing trawlers Sagita and Fizalia during their fishing trips to Antarctic waters off South Georgia from February to July 1978 and from December 1978 to May 1979 respectively. The Bulgarian fishermen, along with those of the Soviet Union, Poland and East Germany are the pioneers of modern Antarctic fishing industry.
