Feature type: Island
This name originates from New Zealand. It is part of the New Zealand Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
A small low lying island approximately 2 km south-southeast of Buckle Island, 0.3 km north-northeast of Sabrina Island, in the Balleny Islands. Included within Antarctic Specially Protected Area 104 Sabrina Island.
The island was named Chinstrap because (together with Sabrina Island) it was the first place on this side of the Antarctica where a colony of Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) were found to be breeding. The island has the only colony of Chinstrap penguins in the Ross Sea region. The next closest colony is at Peter I Øy (island) 4000km away. Originally proposed as 'Islet' but approved as Island by NZ-APNC and US-ACAN in 1975.
