Feature type: Tongue
This name originates from New Zealand. It is part of the New Zealand Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
The seaward extension of the Shipley Glacier, approximately 1.5km in length. The tongue is formed where Shipley Glacier is squeezed between Cape Barrow and Turret Island, also forming Siren Bay on its eastward side.
Named in association with Shipley Glacier. Originally described by the Northern Party of the British Antarctic (Terra Nova) Expedition 1910-13 who camped nearby. Examination of historic aerial photos and maps shows that the ice tongue forms, breaks away, and reforms in this location.
