One of a list of features on the summit of Mount Erebus proposed in 1977. They are generally descriptive names and were in use publications made at the time. The names were later incorporated into the L&S37/106 maps (1981), a detailed topographic survey at 1:5000 scale. The seismic station at the site is named 'TRC' [Truncated Cones], and the adjacent feature Seismic Bluff was in turn, named for it.
