Earlier significant Antarctic associations include 1) being a Sea Cadet on the frigate HMNZS Hawea during the summer of 1956/1957. The Hawea was on the first New Zealand scientific voyage into the Southern Ocean and Ross Sea. It was accompanying HMNZS Endeavour (carrying the original Trans Antarctic Expedition party including the late Sir Edmund Hillary), which was travelling to Antarctica to establish Scott Base, at the commencement of the 1957 International Geophysical Year; and 2) visiting Scott Base and McMurdo region on the Distinguished Visitor tour in January 1994.
