Narrative

The northern summit on Daniell Peninsula. The feature is flanked by Whitehall Glacier to the west, Tucker Inlet and Tucker Glacier to the north, and Ross Sea at the east. Topographic map: SS 58-60/2 Cape Hallett (1:250,000).

Named For

Submitted by Antarctica New Zealand and officially named by the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa on 7 August 2008, for Dr Dean Peterson. This is in recognition of his significant contribution to, and leadership of, New Zealand’s scientific effort in Antarctica during his ten years (1998-2008) with Antarctica New Zealand as Manager Science and Information and Science Strategy Manager. His notable achievements include: 1) developing the New Zealand Antarctic Science Strategy; 2) having significant input to the New Zealand government decision to provide new funding for International Polar Year research; 3) playing a key role in the development of the Latitudinal Gradient Project, ANDRILL and ITASE scientific projects; 4) being instrumental in the establishment of strong science collaborations with the US National Science Foundation, Australian Antarctic Division, Italy and Malaysia; and 5) acting as both Scott Base Manager and Senior Antarctica New Zealand representative in Antarctica.
