Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Philip A. Carnes, engineering and construction manager for Antarctic Support Services, who supervised construction and maintenance performed at the U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) South Pole, Siple and McMurdo Stations for three seasons, 1973-76.
