Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1994 after John W. Holmes, cartographer, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Branch of Special Maps, 1951-77, a specialist in Antarctic mapping. From 1977, assigned to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mapping Applications Center.
