Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1960-63. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Major Robert L. Cantrell, U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), pilot on photographic flights in C-130 aircraft during Operation Deep Freeze 1968 and 1969.
