Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960-62. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for James J. Carnes U.S. Navy (USN), chief electrician's mate with the McMurdo Station winter party, 1967.
