The name comes from the strikingly symmetrical configuration of the feature. The name first appeared on the NZ Map NZMS 175/3 2 (1961) though was not made official at the time; following an enquiry from the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) the NZ-Antarctic Place Names Committee approved the name in 1994.
