Narrative

The automatic weather station (Argos ID 1172)(formerly known as G046) on the Casey-Vostok traverse route was established in November 1984. It is located at an elevation of 3096 m.

Named For

Named after Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger who joined the Department of Meteorology at the University of Melbourne in 1961. From 1962-70 he initiated and supervised a long term continuing program of micrometerology and sea ice studies. Schwerdtfeger also participated in a joint Australian-US micrometeorology program for the high inland US Antarctic plateau station. In 1971 he took up the Foundation Chair in Meteorology at Flinders University and has developed and deployed instrumentation for studying ocean heat fluxes under sea-ice and the Ross Ice Shelf. The naming of the automatic weather station for Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger recognises the leading role he has played in the development of Antarctic glaciology.
