Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for William A. Cumbie, Jr., AT2, USN. An aviation electronics technician, Cumbie was radioman on the ski-equipped R4D aircraft carrying R. Admiral George Dufek, U.S. Navy (USN), that was first to land at the geographic South Pole, Oct. 31, 1956.
