Named by the 8th Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE), 1963-64, for physicist Raymond (Ray) A. Hoare, a member of Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE) that examined lakes in Taylor, Wright, and Victoria Valleys.
