Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Peter A. Gentile, Master of U.S. Naval Ship (USNS) Alatna in U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Deep Freeze (OpDFrz) 1961, and of U.S. NavyS Chattahoochee which made four fuel-carrying trips between New Zealand and McMurdo Sound in U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Deep Freeze (OpDFrz) 1963.
