An island approximately 2.4km long at its greatest, rising above the western part of the Ross Ice Shelf approximately 18km southeast of Hoffman Point, 19km northeast of Cape Murray, on the Hillary Coast.
Mapped by the United State Geological Survey (USGS) from tellurometer surveys and Navy air photos, 1959-63. Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander James J. Brosnahan, U.S. Navy commander of the McMurdo Station winter party, 1961.
