Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1996 after Peter T. Doran, paleolimnologist, Desert Research Institute (Reno, NV), who has conducted studies of the paleolimnology and climate of the McMurdo Dry Valleys from 1993.
