A nunatak at the south of the Britannia Range at Byrd Glacier, 6.5km northwest of Mount Rummage and 38km southwest of the prominent Mount McClintock.
Plotted by the US Geological Survey from air photographs taken by the US Navy in 1960-62. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Shepard L. Darnell, a member of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6. During the period December 27, 1962-January 4, 1963, Chief Darnell and six mechanics replaced in the field the engine of a helicopter downed on Emmanuel Glacier.
