Mapped from air photographs taken by the US Navy. Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after Graeme N. Johnstone, a New Zealand auroral scientist at Byrd Station during the winter of 1962, who also served as warehouseman at McMurdo Station during the winter of 1964.
