Narrative

A mountain with steep slopes on the south and east rising to c.3240m, in Stever Ridge, Victory Mountains, north Victoria Land. Approximately 2.6km west-northwest of Mount Yost, 3.2km southeast of Mount Riddolls.

Named For

Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Roger L. Payne, geographer, historian, toponymist, and Executive Secretary, U.S. Board on Geographic Names, 1993-2006, whose office includes responsibility for geographic nomenclature in Antarctica. His contributions to the design and implementation of the Geographic Names Information System from 1985 pioneered the development of automated national placename repositories. In 2000 he assisted on the Transantarctic Mountain Deformation Survey, Ross Island Photo Identification, and Satellite Imagery identification in Antarctica.
