Narrative

A rock outcrop on the coast about 7 km south-west of Mawson. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-37) and called Ringxya (The Ring Island). The feature was first visited by an ANARE survey party in a Weasel led by surveyor Dovers on 17th July 1954. Dovers diary for Saturday 17th July 1954 reads as follows: Wind. Moderate to fresh south easterly breeze. Cloud 3/8 strato cu. Temps Max +1.7 Min -8.0. Barometer 1008.1 steady. Ice conditions. No apparent change. General camp duties are in progress. Storer has been busy on stores lists. Macey on repairs to the AR7. Russell on radio maintenance in the engine room. Schwartz is now very busy reducing tide gauge results for transmission by radio to France. Harvey is at the moment producing the sideboard for the NSB hut. This is to be his chef d'oevre. Stinear and I planned to take No3 weasel on a tour of the local islands this morning to erect survey cairns and collect geological specimens. However the weather looked unpromising in the morning and we delayed departure until after lunch. It was more an experimental trip to see whether this could be done on day trips ex camp. We left at 2pm and worked as far west as Ringoya and returned to camp by 5pm. The weasel gave a little trouble with a petrol blockage. Ringoya was to be our alternative campsite. It is nowhere near as satisfactory as here. Drifts are lying much deeper and there are few hut sites. Geologically it is very much the same as here. We ate steak ex our frozen meat depot tonight. A very welcome change in our diet and appreciated by all. Radio contact was poor in morning but improved later. One trace of seal was seen at Ringoya. It appeared fairly recent, otherwise no birds or animals were see. Storer was nightwatchman.
