An island, about 5 km long and 2 km wide, separated by a narrow strait from Fold Island, Kemp Land. This island was identified as a separate island by D.S. Trail, who carried out geological investigations in the area.
Named after W.R. McCarthy, petrologist with the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories, Adelaide, who described several hundred specimens from Antarctica collected by ANARE geologists.
