Narrative

An island in the Southern Ocean within the Antarctic convergence. Captain John J. Heard of the American barque Oriental sighted the island on 25 November 1853. Evidence exists of earlier sightings, the first by the British sealer, Peter Kemp of the brig Magnet on 27 November 1833.
