This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer.

Narrative

The largest Island of the McDonald Group. Captain William McDonald of the English ship Samarang discovered the McDonald Islands on 3 January, 1854. He also sighted Heard Island, and until Heard's priority was established (Captain John J. Heard of the American barque Oriental sighted the island on 25 November 1853), some British charts applied the name McDonald group to include Heard Island.
