Narrative

Captain William McDonald of the English ship Samarang on 3 January, 1854 discovered the McDonald Islands. He also sighted Heard Island, and until Heard''s priority was established (Captain John J. Heard of the American barque Oriental sighted the island on 25 November 1853), some British charts applied the name McDonald group to include Heard Island.
