Es la mayor de las islas del archipiélago de Palmer. Fue bautizada en 1898 por el Teniente Adrián de Gerlache, jefe de la expedición del "BELGICA" (1897-1899), que vivió en Amberes (Bélgica). El topónimo fue aprobado por la C.C.G. en 1956 y es traducción. Posteriormente fue publicado en TSAA1. SHN H-714.
