Fueron descubiertas por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1903-1905, al mando del Dr. Jean B. Charcot, quien les dio el nombre por la República Argentina. La BGLE , al mando de Rymill, instaló en 1935 una base en estas islas e invernó, efectuando un levantamiento biológico, geológico y cartográfico. En algunas cartas chilenas antiguas, el nombre figuró traducido como islas Argentina. Grupo de islas, islotes y rocas, separados del continente por el estrecho Penola y de la isla Petermann por el paso Francés, formando un cordón que se extiende por 3,8 millas en dirección NNE-SSE y 2,8 millas hacia el WNW, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
