Fue cartografiado en 1927 por personal de la investigación Discovery de 1926-1927, en la nave "Discovery", al mando de Stanley Kemp, quienes probablemente le dieron el nombre por haber sido este islote una estación de observación con astrolabio. En algunas cartas chilenas de 1947, figuró como isla Astrolabio, pero en 1957 se volvió a su denominación original para evitar la confusión con la isla Astrolabio en el estrecho Bransfield. Islote situado a 1,5 cable de la costa E de la isla Anvers, a 3,2 millas al SW de la punta Van Ryswyck, archipiélago de Palmer.
