Este nombre apareció en una carta de 1825 de la Expedición Británica cazadora de focas de 1822-1824, al mando de James Weddell, y probablemente corresponde al apellido de Charles H. Barnard, capitán de la nave "Charity", de Nueva York, quien se encontraba cazando en las islas Shetland del Sur en los años 1820-1821, cuando Weddell también estaba allí. Weddell estableció en sus memorias que conoció más tarde a Barnard en las islas Falkland. Monte que se eleva a 1.788 metros y que está ubicado a 9 millas al W de la punta Pin, extremo oriental de la isla Livingston, islas Shetland del Sur.
