Esta costa fue descubierta y fotografiada desde el aire por miembros de la Base East del USAS, 1939-1941, durante un vuelo el 30 de diciembre de 1940. Aunque el nombre original fue Richard Black Coast, desde 1956 se emplea costa Black para evitar el nombre compuesto. El nombre corresponde al apellido del comandante Richard B. Black, USNR, jefe del vuelo del 30 de diciembre de 1940 y comandante de la Base East. Costa que se extiende entre el cabo Boggs y el cabo Mackintosh, en la costa oriental de la penĂ­nsula Tierra de O'Higgins.
