This name originates from Chile. It is part of the Chile Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
Durante la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1947 se denominó a este accidente, que no tenía nombre, isla Teniente Bonert, por el grado y apellido del teniente 1º Federico Bonert Holzapfel, de la Armada de Chile, integrante de la Expedición del Servicio Antártico de los EE.UU. de 1939-1940, al mando del contraalmirante Richard E. Byrd, USN (Ret). Desde 1963 se emplea islote Bonert, para evitar el nombre compuesto. Es el de más al N y el más pequeño de dos islotes que se desprenden del cabo Arauco, extremo N de la isla Alejandro I.
