Descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Alemana de 1873-1874, al mando de Eduard Dallmann, la que le puso el nombre por el apellido de Oskar Booth, o de Stanley Booth, o de ambos, miembros de la Sociedad Geográfica de Hamburgo. El Comité Consultivo sobre Nombres Antárticos de los EE.UU., en su oportunidad, rechazó el nombre isla Wandel, que había sido puesto por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899 y prefirió el nombre original. En cartas antiguas figuró como isla Wandel, isla Wandell e isla Wanden; todos estos nombres han sido derogados en razón de que el aplicado por Dallmann es el más antiguo y el original. Es la mayor y la más importante de las islas Dannebrog. Mide 4,5 millas de largo y su extremo N está a 4,8 millas al SW del cabo Renard. Está separada de la costa occidental de Tierra de O'Higgins por el canal Lemaire.
