Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Sueca de 1901-1903, al mando del Dr. Otto Nordenskjöld, quien no determinó su naturaleza insular y creyendo que era un cabo que se proyectaba desde la costa, lo denominó cabo Sobral. El Instituto Hidrográfico de la Armada de Chile le dio el nombre en 1963 por el teniente Alberto Chandler Baunen, navegante y meteorólogo de la corbeta argentina "Uruguay" que rescató a la Expedición Nordenskjöld en 1903 desde la isla Cerro Nevado. Este nombre apareció por primera vez en una carta de 1964, manteniéndose el nombre cabo Sobral para el extremo S de la isla. Isla de unas 12 millas de extensión en sentido N-S, ubicada a media distancia entre cabo Longing y cabo Worsley, costa oriental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
