Fueron descubiertos por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien les dio el nombre por Luis Cruls, astrónomo belga y después director del Observatorio de Río de Janeiro. En cartas antiguas han figurado como islas Crulls e islotes Crulls. Está compuesto por un grupo numeroso de islotes que se encuentran ubicados al WNW de las islas Argentine y a 11,5 millas al W de punta Moot de la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
