Fue descubierta y cartografiada por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le dio el nombre por Madame De Rongé, quien contribuyó a la expedición. En algunas cartas de 1947 se le aplicó erróneamente el nombre de isla Cuverville e isla Cuveiville. En otras cartas chilenas entre 1951 y 1957 se le llamó isla Ronge e isla De Ronge. Isla montañosa y maciza, que mide 5 millas de largo en sentido N-S por 2,5 de ancho medio y que alcanza una altura de 1.158 metros. Está situada frente a la península Arctowski y separada de esta por el canal Errera, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
