Esta bahía fue visitada a comienzos de 1822 por los cazadores de focas de esta zona. Su nombre probablemente se deba a Robert Fildes, un cazador inglés de focas de aquella época. Esta extensa bahía se forma en la costa SW de la isla Rey Jorge y la costa NW de isla Nelson, mide 5,5 millas de ancho en su boca por 8 de saco, en las islas Shetland del Sur. La bahía es profunda y de fondo irregular. En invierno sus aguas se congelan, en verano se producen los deshielos, y los glaciares descargan hielos flotantes en la bahía.
