Fue descubierto por la Expedición Antártica Sueca 1901-1904, al mando del comandante Otto Nordenskjöld, se le dio este nombre por el barco "Fridtjof" que se despachó desde Suecia a buscar a los componentes de dicha expedición que se habría perdido en 1903. Paso de orientación N a S, de 5 millas de largo por 2 de ancho, separa las islas Andersson y Jonassen de la península Tabarín, extremo NE de la península Luis Felipe. El paso es limpio y profundo, su navegación se dificulta por la presencia de un gran cantidad de hielos que cubren sus aguas.
