Cartografiado y denominado por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1903-1905 al mando del Dr. Jean B. Charcot; Alfred Grandidier, quien en esa época, era presidente de la Sociedad Geográfica de París. Masa de agua situada entre el N de las islas Biscoe y el W de las costas de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. El canal Grandidier está por lo general cubierto por gran cantidad de hielos flotantes que se desprenden del pack-ice continental.
