Fue descubierta y denominada isla Kvogmann, por la Expedición Antártica Alemana que dirigió Eduard Dallmann entre los años 1873-1874, pero el nombre isla Hovgaard, aplicado por la Expedición Antártica Belga al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache en los años 1897-1899 ha llegado a ser el nombre en uso. Isla de 3 millas de largo aproximadamente, situada a 0,5 milla al SW de isla Booth en la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. La isla está completamente cubierta de nieve, es casi inaccesible, sus costas están constituidas en su mayor parte por acantilados de hielo.
