Fue descubierto por la Expedición Antártica Francesa, que guiaba el Dr. Jean B. Charcot, entre los años 1908-1910 y llamado así por Manuel Láinez, senador de la República Argentina, y fundador del periódico "El Diario". Promontorio escarpado rocoso de una altura de 900 metros que forma el extremo W de isla Pourquoi-Pas al W de la costa de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
