El nombre fue puesto en el año 1838 por el capitán Jules Sebastián Dumont D'Urville por el Rey de Francia. Situada en el extremo NE de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. Se extiende en dirección NE por espacio de 80 millas, hasta una línea que une los cabos Kater y Longing, su centro está ubicado aproximadamente en Lat. 63° 40' S - Long. 58° 30' W.
