El estrecho tomó este nombre de la bahía Matha, nombre original dado por el Dr. Jean B. Charcot, jefe de la Expedición Antártica Francesa de los años 1908-1910, quien le dio este nombre por la forma de bahía que tomaban las aguas. La Expedición Británica, 1934-1937, al mando del comandante John Rymill, reconoció que en realidad se trataba de un estrecho y no de una bahía, cambiando el nombre a estrecho Matha. Recibió su nombre en honor al teniente A. Matha, segundo comandante de la Expedición Antártica Francesa, que se llevó a efecto entre los años 1903-1905, bajo la dirección del Dr. Jean B. Charcot.
