Probablemente, el primero en cartografiarlo fue el capitán Nathaniel B. Palmer, cazador de focas americano, quien lo denominó estrecho Harmony. El capitán George Powell en el año 1822 lo denominó estrecho Rey Jorge, mientras que James Weddell en su carta de 1825 lo denominó estrecho Parrys. Desde entonces se le conoce como estrecho Nelson, cuyo nombre fue dado probablemente por quedar en las cercanías de la isla Nelson. Estrecho situado entre las islas Nelson y Robert, en las islas Shetland del Sur.
