Fue descubierto por la Expedición Francesa de 1908-1910 al mando del Dr. Jean B. Charcot, quien le dio el nombre por el contraalmirante Robert E. Peary, famoso explorador americano del Ártico y descubridor del Polo Norte en 1909. Macizo elevado de 1.900 metros de altura con una cumbre plana y extensa cubierta de nieve que es sobrepasado por un pico que se levanta a 7 millas al ENE de cabo Tuxen en la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
