Este estrecho fue navegado por la Expedición Belga el 12 de febrero de 1898 al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache. Fue denominado por la Expedición Británica de 1934-1937 al mando de John Rymill quien le puso este nombre por el buque expedicionario "Penola". Estrecho de aproximadamente 7 millas de largo con un término medio de 2 millas. Separa las islas Argentine de la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
