Fueron descubiertos y aerofotografiados el 23 de noviembre de 1935 por Lincoln Ellsworth, quien al darles este nombre descriptivo dejó de manifiesto, su posición prominente sobre la accidentada superficie helada que los rodea. En cartas y publicaciones chilenas han figurado anteriormente como cadena Centinel (1956) y montes Centinela (1962). Se extienden entre las latitudes 77º y 79º S y las longitudes 86º y 93º W, alcanzado su mayor altura en el monte Ulmer que se alza a 3.810 mts.
